Outside Crookston academy

[A teenage Japanese girl sits on a bench, just outside the school gates. She's got a book in her hands--it looks like it's in English, in fact by the cover art it looks a lot like Lord of the Flies--and she's scowling at it. She'd quite obviously rather be anywhere than here.]

Little Tokyo

[As it turns out, there's a Books Kinokuniya in Little Tokyo, which is where our girl is just leaving from with the current issues of Ribon, Nakayoshi, Margaret and, oddly enough, Weekly Shonen Magazine now stashed away in her backpack. She'll linger a little on the streets, eying the plastic food in restaurant windows.

More than anything else, she looks homesick.]

[Maki doesn't seem to have noticed that he's been followed, but he'll duck into an alley. See, the fishmonger he got this packet of fish from really hated his job and desired a better one, and such desire makes for the best Yummies...]

[Oh yes, it's still there. Gosh, this guy is so very obviously bad news. She wishes Phobos and Deimos could have come with her to America. They'd be reassuring to have with her as she tails this creep.]

[Maki pauses and removes a fish from his bag of groceries. A coin slot of some sort has appeared in the side of this fish. Surely this is all natural and nothing at all odd will happen when he sticks that weird silver coin he's holding in his other hand into the slot.]

[pyreseer]

[Okay, it's now or never. She's just going to run up to the man with her ofuda out and slap it down on his back, yelling:]

Evil spirits begone!

[talktothedoll]

What the--?!

[At least Maki has dropped the fish, and the coin slot has vanished. The doll's pose looks cross as Maki turns to face her.]

[pyreseer]

[... does she have another ofuda? No, no she does not. Still. Deep breaths. Confront the obviously evil man. And if you need to? Run.]

What were you doing to that fish?

[talktothedoll]

[Maki is still not making eye contact with her, only with that doll. He does, however, look rather annoyed.]

What I was doing is none of your business.

[pyreseer]

You were doing something weird! With coins!

[talktothedoll]

What I am doing with those is none of your concern.

[There is a definite dangerous purple glow in the doctor's eyes...even if he's still only looking at the doll.]

I'm giving you one chance to get out of here before you get in over your head.

[pyreseer]

[Damn it, she's out of ofuda and that purple glow is the sign of something really nasty. She's outclassed and she knows it.]

Fine! But you haven't seen the last of me!

[talktothedoll]

A wise choice.

[But he'll stop doing whatever it was he was about to do to that fish...at least until he's certain they're well enough away from each other that he won't be bothered.]

[pyreseer]

[She runs the heck away--but she means it. Next time she'll have a bunch of ofuda with her and she'll show him what she's really made of.]
